It was a “painful experience”
for Rajesh Munishwar to see his city burn to ashes as he flees from Kyiv.
Resident or non-resident, for a person who has spent the important years of his
life building his future in a city, watching it getting devastated will be
similar to his heart getting thrashed by an ice brick. Rajesh Munishwar felt
the same.
For 17 years, Rajesh Munishwar
had been living in Kyiv as a space and defense engineer and runs a missile
designing company in Kyiv. Coming from Maharashtra’s Nagpur, 35-year-old,
Rajesh Munishwar escaped Kyiv with his wife and 8-year-old son and crossed over
to Romania, Ukraine’s neighboring country. According to Munishwar, Kyiv has
been surrounded by Russian forces from all sides and the entire city, including
key establishments and buildings, has become a victim of heavy bombing.

On Wednesday morning, Rajesh
Munishwar had a telephone conversation from Romania with the PTI. He said that
he and his family are a part of a group of 18 Indians who arranged vehicles for
themselves and crossed over to the neighboring cities.
He said, “Kyiv is surrounded
by the Russian forces from all sides. Northwest and northeast of Kyiv are occupied. Intense fighting is going on between the forces on streets and buildings
in Kyiv. The devastation is huge. Yesterday, a 64-km-long convoy of Russian
forces headed towards Kyiv. Russians told the local people to vacate the city
as they planned to make heavy bombing in Kyiv.”
Adding to that he also
mentioned, “At Labanovska Street, 200 meters away from our home, a cruise
missile hit a building and its ninth and tenth floor were completely destroyed.
The road from our home to the University of Defence is totally barricaded.
Heavy firing between the natives and invasion forces is going on.” He informed me
that face-to-face fighting has become quite normal in Kyiv. He also said that
in Ukraine there is a curfew from 5 pm to 7 am and that Kharkiv city’s freedom
square, central administration buildings were heavily bombarded.
He said, “Yesterday, they used
a thermobaric vacuum bomb. Famous tractor factory XTZ was bombarded. The
destruction was enormous. In Kyiv, a television tower got destroyed after it
was bombed yesterday. It was a painful experience to see your city is burning”.
The world’s largest aircraft An-225 Mriya, designed and built in Ukraine, was
destroyed two days back. Almost in all major cities and towns, including Kyiv,
shelling, and destruction are consistent, he said.
“The Indian Embassy had asked
us yesterday to vacate Kyiv urgently and escape by any means. We went to the
railway station on foot but saw a huge rush there. It was not possible to take
any train as locals were given preference. For people from other countries,
boarding a train is next to impossible”, he said.
He also said, “We are 18
Indians, who arranged small vans and buses and crossed over into the neighboring
countries. I, my wife, and child reached Romania yesterday late at night and
are staying in base camp. We are expected to board a flight to India today.”
